Workshops and activities available across the day include:

The Palace of Sanctuary Play space | For ages 0-4s
Family Battle Drill | For ages 6-11
Roman Armour interactive talks | For ages 6-11

University of Warwick: Roman Coventry Project | For ages 6-11
Most workshops and activities will be drop in across the day. Certain activities will start at designated times, and we recommend you arrive ready for the start time to avoid missing out on the full experience. Where workshops are bookable in advance, you will be contacted ahead of time to choose you preferred time.
Overview of each activity:
Sensory Stories and Rhymes: Roman Special
The Learning and Engagement Team are bringing their popular Sensory Stories and Rhymes session to the Lunt Roman Fort, where young children can enjoy 30 minutes of storytelling through interactive play and hands-on sensory experiences. Stories will be bought to life with songs and each child will have a sensory pack to play with throughout the session that links to the Roman story being told.
The Palace of Sanctuary Play Space
Enjoy open-ended play using a wide range of loose parts that give subtle nods to ancient times. This experience is an opportunity for children to experience free-play that encourages curiosity and imagination, whilst also building on the engineering and problem solving skills as they use our play things to create their own immersive environment.
Family Battle Drill
Prepare yourselves for an experience that will last a lifetime. Our most popular activity is the Family Battle Drill, where children become soldiers and learn the skills of what it took to be part of the Roman Army. Children will be led around the fort by a costumed Roman guide and visit the huge circular wooden gyrus, where they will become armed with shields and swords (or sometimes pool noodles to maintain modern day safety standards). They will discover different battle formations, such as the Testudo, or more commonly known as the ‘tortoise’.
Roman Armour Interactive Talks
In the granary, which houses the museum, children will hear about the lives of soldiers at the fort, get the opportunity to handle Roman objects and discover more about the nature and function of Roman armour and weapons.
Clay Lamp Crafts
Create a keepsake to take home with you, as children learn how to make their very own Roman Lamp out of air-drying clay. Be inspired by lamps of the past and add decorative designs to the outside of them, to give your lamp an authentic look.
Engineering Aqueducts
The Romans famously invented and engineered many structures and great pieces of architecture, including aqueducts to supply water to many Roman cities. In this activity, children will put their STEM skills into practice, as our team guide them in a structure building challenge to make an aqueduct that can successfully stay upright and transfer water.
University of Warwick, Classics Department
We will also welcome academics from the University of Warwick’s Classic Department, who will be sharing fun facts and information about Roman Coventry. You can see more about the research and resources they have developed here: Roman Coventry and Warwickshire Project
Full timings of the day will follow. Following on from your booking, our team will contact you in the lead up to the event to confirm which bookable workshops you would like to attend on the day to help us manage numbers, avoiding overcrowding and to create a positive learning environment for your children,
Please note, bookable workshops will be repeated to allow for maximum participation.
For further information, please contact Lisa Ford, Learning and Engagement Manager: ctm.info@cvlife.co.uk
